Soft Targets and the Active-Threat Reality — Prepare Before You're Forced To

July 3, 2026

The businesses that come through an active-threat event are the ones that prepared when it felt unnecessary. Waiting until it feels necessary means waiting too long.

Nobody wants to think about an active-threat event at their business, which is exactly why so few are prepared for one. But the reality of the environment we're in is that ordinary businesses — the "soft targets" without obvious security — are where these events increasingly happen, precisely because they're unprepared and unprotected. I'd rather have this conversation with you now, calmly, than have you wish you'd had it after.

Preparation isn't about turning your workplace into a fortress or living in fear. It's about a few concrete things that dramatically change outcomes. First, prevention and early warning: most of these events have warning signs — concerning behavior, threats, a person in crisis — and a business with a real way to surface and act on those signals catches many of them before they happen. That's the highest-value layer, and it's the one most businesses skip. Second, your people need to know what to do. Not a vague sense of "run, I guess," but a rehearsed understanding of how to respond — evacuate, shelter, or defend as a last resort — so that in the moment, training takes over instead of paralysis. Rehearsed response saves lives; improvised response costs them.

Third, physical measures that buy time: how someone gets into your space, how quickly you can lock down, how your people communicate and account for each other, how you guide responders in when they arrive. None of this requires a massive budget. It requires thinking it through before, when you have the time to plan, instead of during, when you have none.

The hardest part is simply deciding to do it while it still feels unnecessary. That's the whole game. Every business that was ready got ready on an ordinary day when nothing was wrong.

This is work I take seriously, and it's work my teams are built for — Blockhouse Consulting to assess your vulnerabilities and build the plan and the training, Regional Security Group to provide the presence and response capability where it's warranted. If you've never walked through what your business would actually do, let's do it together. It's the most important assessment you'll hope you never need.
